Alex leads financial planning as a partner at Summit Trail Advisors, where he advises ultra-high net worth clients. Leveraging an extensive background in equity, he manages their insurance portfolios as a financial asset class and organizes their data to strategically and maintain their families’ estates.

Alex began his insurance career in 2000 at Further Lane Asset Management, where he focused on raising high-net-worth capital for institutionally platform-approved hedge funds and developed the firm’s insurance and estate planning business for family office clients. In 2005, Alex turned his attention to the asset-backed space, aggregating life settlements for private equity and hedge fund investors using his own insurance licensed company, A. Shapses & Company. Thereafter, he co-founded Dearborn Capital Partners, where he was instrumental in aggregating more than $3 billion of notional value while actively managing a life settlement fund in excess of $1.5 billion of notional face. In 2013, he was hired as a consultant to Institutional Life Services, owned by Madison Dearborn Capital, to focus on portfolio and block trading with private equity, hedge fund, and institutional relationships. Prior to joining Summit Trail in 2021, Alex was a partner at Heritage Strategies, LLC.

Alex holds a Bachelor’s in Finance and Organization Management from Emory University’s Gouizeta Business School in Atlanta, Georgia, and a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) designation from New York University. He maintains Life and Health Insurance, Property and Casualty Insurance, Life Settlement Broker, and Series 7 licenses. He lives on Long Island with his family and is actively involved in UJA and IAVA.
